Vitamin D or cholecalciferol has an essential role in human body. Vitamin D contributes to:
- the absorption and normal use of calcium and phosphorus;
maintaining the normal calcium concentration in the blood;
maintaining the health of the bone and teeth; - maintaining the normal function of the muscular system;
- normal functioning of the immune system;
the cell division process.
Named also “the Sun’s vitamin”, vitamin D is synthesized in the skin under the ultraviolet radiations action. During the cold season, when the sunlight is reduced, it is recommended to supplement the diet with food rich in vitamin D (salmon, herring, sardine, tuna oil, sturgeon, turbot, egg yolk, beer yeast, etc.) or with nutritional supplements. Also, it is very important to provide the child an optimal intake of vitamin D during the growing period, for a harmonious development of the skeleton.
In children, vitamin D deficiency causes rickets, characterized by abnormal bone development (which is mainly reflected in the limbs, ribs, sternum), delayed dentition and delayed dentition change, hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia. Although vitamin D deficiency may begin early, bone deformities become apparent only at an advanced stage.
In adults, lack of vitamin D causes osteomalacia and osteoporosis, characterized by skeletal pain, especially in the lower chest and lower limbs, and in advanced form, by basal deformities and spontaneous fractures.
